Voluntary Sector Award

The 2008 Winner of the COF Volunteer Organization of the Year ...

Central Okanagan Hospice Association!

Established in 2000, the COF Volunteer Organization of the Year Award is given to a voluntary organization that has contributed outstanding support to the community. The award is presented at the City of Kelowna Civic Awards Dinner each Aprial. The selected organization receives a $1,000 cash award from the COF to assist them with their activities.

Death and dying are a normal part of our life cycle, but not one readily accepted by most people in our Western culture. It’s the role of the Central Okanagan Hospice Association to help make that transition a little easier for everyone. Often found providing vigil service to the dying, sometimes sitting at a bedside all night long so a patient won’t be alone, the COHA volunteers endeavour to make it so nobody dies alone.

In 2007, they celebrated their 25th anniversary and as they move into their 26th year, have managed to surpass all expectations in terms of commitment and dedication. Last year alone, some 17,200 volunteer hours were donated by their members.
