CENTRAL OKANAGAN FOUNDATION 30TH AGM AND $30,000 GRANT!
Central Okanagan Foundation 30th AGM and $30,000 Grant!
This week, the Central Okanagan Foundation distributed over $100, 000 to various charitable groups in the form of grants to improve the quality of life in our community.
The Foundation also we announced their 30th Anniversary Grant winner at the AGM tonight:
Capri Rotary Club in partnership with the City of Kelowna and Holding Hands for Hospice was the winning applicaton with a project to develop a section of the Mill Creek Linear Park. This new section of the Park will be used by local residents for recreation, as well as for patients and family of those at Kelowna’s new freestanding Hospice.
This beautiful section of the trail will be a benefit to all those who use it and fits well with the Central Okanagan Foundation’s goal of building our community through the provision of funding and the encouragement of partnership.
Since the Central Okanagan Foundation's inception in 1977 they have provided over $3 million for the charitable sector.
Money gets to the charitable sector in 2 ways – the most familiar method is through its annual granting cycles.
The second way is by annual "allocations" on family or corporate “Funds” where the income is directed by the donor. The Foundation has 117 family funds and 114 organizational funds for a total of 231 funds in its Endowment. Another $40, 000 was distributed this fall in the form of “allocations”. The total amount distributed in the last month alone is over $170, 000 to the charitable sector!
What puts the Central Okanagan Foundation in a league of its own is its DIVERSITY – they don’t just focus on one area of need such as education or health. The Foundation provides funding for a broad range of charitable needs. Funding support spans 8 diverse fields of interest:
1. Arts and Culture
2. Children, Youth and Family
3. Education
4. Health and Community Service
5. Heritage and Historical
6. Animal Welfare
7. Environment
8. Global Initiatives
Wondering where the money to distribute comes from? From donors of course. The Foundation's primary focus is on building income on donor gifts by endowing the money, investing it wisely and for long term gain vs. short term returns. Community Foundations only distribute the income earned on the endowment – leaving the principal gift intact and ensuring it remains a renewable resource with the ability to make an ongoing contribution to the community and not just a onetime gift.
Central Okanagan Foundation provides donors with simple, flexible, and innovative ways to support important causes. Gifts to the Foundation create a lasting legacy for the donor and the charitable sector by providing immediate and long term support for existing and emerging community needs.
The Foundation is committed to providing personalized support to donors, including advice on gifting options and access to knowledge about the community needs.
Central Okanagan Foundation is the community’s partner in charitable giving, helping connect donors to the important causes they wish to support.
