Thanks to the kindness and generosity of long-time Okanagan Mission residents Dick and Jean Hall their favorite charities will benefit in perpetuity from a personal endowment fund. In addition, a substantial gift to Central Okanagan Foundation’s Community Fund allows our granting committees the opportunity to provide grants to meet ever-changing community needs.
Long-time Kelowna residents likely remember the Halls' store at the base of Lakeshore hill, and many will recall Dick and Jean’s love of their neighbourhood and appreciation for various not-for-profit groups who contribute to our community’s diversity and health.
Perhaps because he was born in the spring, Dick developed a life-long passion for gardening – or perhaps Jean’s appreciation of gladiolas led him to it.
When Dick met Jean, a nurse at Kelowna General Hospital, he was instantly smitten. They were married in 1953 and shared a lifetime of wonderful memories. Their extensive travels instilled a love of theatre in England, an appreciation for viewing ancient and priceless museum artifacts in Bagdad, and enjoyment from the art and culture of Europe; yet they were always happy to return home to their favorite community, Kelowna.
After 48 happy years together, Dick passed away in 2001 from cancer. Jean continued to enjoy life for many years surrounded by Dick’s garden and friends from their lifetime together. She passed away in September, 2009.
Dick and Jean’s generous support of local arts, education, health, and faith, along with their love of animals continues through income generated by their memorial fund and contribution to Central Okanagan Foundation’s Community Fund.
