PacificSport Regional Sport Centre
PacificSport Okanagan is a regional sport centre based in Kelowna that supports increased sport participation and improved sport performance throughout the Okanagan. The not-for-profit society is committed to developing sport at all levels by integrating athlete services, coaching education, and physical literacy opportunities. The Okanagan Regional Sport Centre has developed a variety of programs and services to support Okanagan based sport initiatives at all stages of the Canadian Sport for Life continuum.
With the funding support from the Central Okanagan Foundation in fall 2016, PacificSport Okanagan has been implementing Physical Literacy Initiatives to primary and elementary school-aged children and youth in the Central Okanagan in an effort to enhance overall physical literacy in the community. Through physical literacy mentoring for teachers, children are now learning fundamental movement skills supported by qualified instructors. Quality physical education programs offer an opportunity to foster the development of physical literacy for all children and youth by providing equal and equitable access to the development of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to become physically literate. By learning these skills in a fun, safe and engaging environment, we are able to ensure that every child has the basic physical literacy tools they need to take part in physical activity and sport, both for healthy life-long enjoyment and for sporting success.
Similar to traditional literacy development, physical literacy is a life-long learning process that is developed and strengthened over time. Children involved in the Physical Literacy based programs are able to learn age appropriate fundamental movement skills in a variety of settings prior to sport specific skill acquisition. The ability to develop these skills early in the "development years" provides children with the foundation that they require to be confident and successful in future sport and physical activity endeavors. Increasing the number of Physical Literacy Champions in our community builds sustainability by increasing the number of healthy and Active for Life role models, leaders, and coaches working with children and youth in the Central Okanagan.
“If it weren’t for the support of the Central Okanagan Foundation, we [PacificSport Okanagan] could not sustain the delivery of such important life skills – developing physical literacy in children.” Carolyn Gillespie, Sport Development Coordinator, PacificSport Okanagan.
